The CVT in "S" mode (not using paddles) keeps the revs at a pretty decent torque/power ratio so that touching the accelerator is actually quite responsive at just about any speed without the need to downshift, thus actually providing some pretty instantaneous power when you need it.

Having said that, I typically drive in "D" mode and only flip to "S" when ascending hills or in heavy stop and go traffic. The trade off driving in "D" is less response for more quiet and economy. As conditions change, I frequently move to "S".
