replaced my CVT fluid today

here are some pics to help out anyone whose looking to replace their CVT fluid

circled in red are where you need to disconnect things to remove the air filter box. 2x 10mm screws, a hose with a clamp on it, and a rubber boot you can just pull by hand.

CVT fluid drain. 3/8 drive.

drain plug for CVT has a magnetic tip. don't forget to clean it off.

captured exactly 3.5 qts.

with the air filter box removed you will see a rubber plug with a metal tab sticking out of it. you just need to pull it out to fill.

use genuine fluid. i just put back in the amount that came out. 3.5 qts.

here it is all put back together

whole process shouldn't take more than an hour.

Thanks for the write-up. Your engine bay looks real clean. And yes, that is a nice garage.

How many miles did you have on the car before the fluid change?

I didn't do it this way. I used a long funnel and I refilled it through the overflow port until it started coming out.

Seems to have worked ok.

i knew the fill plug was ontop of the tranny somewhere but i couldn't see it which is why i just decided to pull the air filter box. comes out in few min.

When I was shopping for my car, I also looked at the Nissan Versa Note. By comparison, changing the CVT fluid in a Note is a complex multistep, unforgiving nightmare. It was one of the reasons I scratched the Note from my list. Nice to see that Honda has a far better process.

(As it happened, I bought a 2013 Fit with a 5-Speed Auto)

At 32k? isn't that too soon? I wonder what the manual says. Then again I don't know after all it is a small car with small parts. Seems simple thank you for the write up for future reference

I changed mine @ 18k but I've been tracking my car at times 100f ambient temps. I just felt better about changing it.

Mine's a daily driver so I'll just change it when the maintenance minder says so. A previous member in this thread went over 80k before it was changed and he used it as a work delivery vehicle: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-...ml#post1331172

After closely reviewing the manual I did NOT find anything about the 2016 Honda Fit CVT transmission fluid flush. But what I did find was the maintanace minder/reminder section which stated this:

Follow maintenance reminder:

A is an oil change.

B is an oil and oil filter change & a bunch of inspections.

A and B will alternate.

1 is the subcode for rotating tires and it will always appear on every maintenance interval.

2 replace the air filter and pollen filter and inspect drive belt.

3 replace transmission fluid

4 replace spark plugs and check valve clearance

5 replace engine coolant

6 replace rear differential fluid

So after looking at this then I will just wait for the code to pop up to change the fluid. I mean all depends how you drive your vehicle. I personally don't track or drive crazy on my fit so I will just wait for the (3) code to pop up.

honda is not known for their good transmissions.

cvt trannys also tend to run hotter so i decided to replace every 30k. fluid did come out dark and had a slight burnt smell to it.

and yes the fluid change did make the car run alot smoother. i also did a oil service at the same time and added RAN UP oil additive. car runs smoother than ever.

probably not a good idea to follow manufacturer recommended timeline for fluid replacements. especially for engine oil.
