Stupid low fuel light
#23
If I had my way (NEVER happens!) the warning light would come on 'orange' at perhaps 2 gallons, then flashing 'red' and beep at 1 gallon. That setup would get my attention early on, then incite due panic when things got serious,

I just ignore that thing. I just look at my mpg (example, 40 mpg) and tell myself .... 10 gals @ 40 mpg = I should be able to go UP TO 400 miles on the tank
Of course, I do fill before that .... usually at the 9 gal mark. I'd like 1 gal in the tank to keep the fuel pump cool

Conservative fuel gauge is on purpose as many of you have figured it out to prevent people from actually emptying the tank before refill and liability. Remember, this is designed for people who don't have common sense!
Alot of ways I wished the Fit had an actual 13 gal tank to go over 400 miles easily. 10.6 gal tank is just too small for my long daily commute. Ah well. It's what it is.

So worst case you had at least another 60+ miles before you were actually out. That's a fair safety margin. Remember all the range, warning lights, and gauges go from WAG to SWAG … Wild Ass Guess to Scientific Wild Ass Guess, but they are all guesses.

When the yellow indicator turns on on my 2017 lx it has always noted that there are 26 miles left to empty...... i once tokk it down to 5 but didnt risk it..... i have to check how much did i used to fill up... cuz i really have no idea

I don't use the low fuel warning as an indicator (I estimate there is at least 2 gallons left in the tank). When the gas gauge shows no bar, I can go at least 6 more miles. The most amount of gas I have refilled is 11.33+ gallons. Be smart, use another way of determining the amount of gas left in the tank. If you don't like that amber light staring at you, cover it up with electrical tape. Please don't tell me that's bad for the fuel pump when the tank is empty, or topping off is bad for the environment.

I've never understood this strange need to allow the gas tank to go down to nothing. I think I've yet to hit a quarter of a tank and almost always fill up when I cross the half way mark. Of course I have two gas stations within a couple hundred feet of me and have to pass them any time I'm coming or going so I guess that helps.

Am I the only one concerned about saturating the charcoal filter int he fuel neck/filler by filling the tank as much as physically possible? From what I've heard over the years, you don't want to fill your tank until fuel is at the very top of the neck under any circumstances. When my low fuel indicator comes on, I try to fill the tank as soon as possible. It's such a small tank and I see no need to try and get the most fuel possible in at a time. In colder weather it's not a bad idea to keep the tank at least 1/4 full, if not more. You guys who are pushing it on low fuel level should consider what might happen if you find yourself in congested traffic unexpectedly. I've never run out of fuel and don't plan to, but imagine that it can be quite unpleasant to do so. Unless your fuel gauge is malfunctioning, running out of fuel is something that can easily be avoided.

There are definitely cars that will be damaged if you fill the neck all the way up. I don't know if the Fit is that way though -- but I stopped trying to jam gas into the car to get to the nearest "round number" years ago.

On a side note, my in-laws live in Modesto so I am there quite frequently. We never take the Fit though - always the minivan.

I've got an 80-85 roundtrip daily commute so about every 3 days I have to fill up. It would be nice to go a full week without filling up so I share the sentiment.

My commute is 60 miles roundtrip, so if I am full on Monday, I can make it to Friday without having to fill the tank. One of my motorcycles that I used to commute on would get 90-100 miles a tank (small tank), so I was filling up every other day. That became old hat very quick.
