The Official Intake Thread

**feel free to correct me/add any info that i might have left out, if you see that i missed an intake post it**

this threads purpose was to cram as much information as possible about any and all intakes for the honda fit/jazz. keep in mind that i my self do not have any first hand experience with all of these intakes (in fact i still have the stock box and filter). alot of the information i am posting is either from this forum or from the manufacturers web site.

i will post intakes in three catagories one o.e. replacement filters. two short ram and third cold air

a few quick definitions:

o.e. replacement AKA drop in filter: this is as easy to install as it gets, these filters are made to have the same or better flow characteristics as the stock filter, while retaining the stock intake system. these will more than likely be the cheapest option when it comes to the intake system. these will also give you the smallest gains in torque and power.

short ram: this is a whole new air intake, meaning that you will have to remove the stock intake components (air box, filter, tubing, etc...). these intakes are not as easy to install as a drop in filter but are more than likely not going to be as hard to install as any cold air intake, they also have less chance of hydro locking like their longer counter parts. these come in all sorts of shapes and materials. from plastics and metals to carbon fiber and fiber glass. some short ram intakes can cost as much if not less than an o.e. replacement filter (like the diy autozone intake) and as much if not more than that sweet set of knock off mf10's you have. you can expect larger gains in power and torque than any o.e. replacement filter, some people dont like the idea of short ram intakes in our cars because where the are in the engine bay, something about behing encased by the engine, radiator and tranny that doesnt sound like such a chilly situation. a few people like to call them hot air intakes.

cold air: this type of intake like the short ram intakes replaces the whole intake assembly. so kiss that bulky box and flimsy filter good bye. unlike short ram intakes cold air intakes relocate the filter element out side of the engine bay (usually some where through the fender). these intakes will more than likely cost more than the majority of short ram intakes for our cars, they will usually provide larger power and torque increases than the other two types of intakes that im writing about. now your thinking "oh sweet its gonna give me colder air and give me larger gains", this might be true. but your getting that at the risk of ingesting water, which is not something you want to do. follow the link here to read about hydrolock and how much fun it isnt. so if you live in a place where it rains alot you should really consider the risks of buying a cold air intake.

now, on to the good stuff...

o.e. replacement filters:
your choices are some what limited when it comes to these.

1.blitz lm filter $59.99 on hopupracing.com
**fits a/t and m/t models**

(copied from hop up racing) Utilizing the same filter as the LM Core-type filters, the BLITZ® LM Stock Replacement Filters are designed to reduce intake restriction and provide maximum filtration without sacrificing the stock air-box. Unlike conventional filters made of paper or foam elements requiring oil to maintain filtering capacity, the LM Stock Replacement filter is made of cotton, without any assistance of oil – the oils used to clean such filters gradually disperses into the inlet tracts of an engine, and coats the walls and in particular the air flow sensor, slowly reducing the performance of the vehicle. The BLITZ® LM Stock Replacement is a simple remove and replace application.

2.hks super hybrid filter $43.38 on nopi.com
**fits a/t and m/t models

i didnt find any information on this one but i can only imagine that it acts just like any other drop in filter.

3.k&n drop in filter $39.99 on crutchfield.com
**fits a/t and m/t models**

(copied from k&n's site) K&N’s replacement air filters are designed to increase horsepower and acceleration while providing excellent filtration. We make over 1,200 different replacement air filters for virtually every vehicle on the road. These filters are washable and reusable and are custom designed to fit into your existing factory air box. Their drop-in design means adding performance is simple. With most vehicles you simply remove the disposable air filter and replace it with a K&N. See applicable instruction sheet for details. Our stock replacement air filters for street vehicles are covered by our famous K&N Million-Mile Limited Warranty™ and will be THE LAST AIR FILTER YOUR VEHICLE WILL EVER NEED.

4. afe (advanced flow engineering) replacement filter $47.25 on afe's online store
**fits a/t and m/t models**

there wasnt any info posted on afe's site for this one. but like the rest it does exactly what you think its going to do.

5. afe (advanced flow engineering) pro dry s air filter $44.00 on betterairflow.com
**fits a/t and m/t models**

(copied from betterairflow.com)
Pro Dry S OER air filters are high-flow, high performance air filters designed to replace the factory air filter. Users will experience increased airflow, horsepower, torque, and fuel economy with their stock airbox. Pro Dry S OER air filters use an oil-free, synthetic media to filter out dirt, dust, and other contaminants that can damage an engine and rob a vehicle of power and performance. The unique Pro Dry S media uses two layers of synthetic material designed to work without oil and still exceed the performance characteristics of natural fibers.
Features:
  • Increased HP and torque
Extra flow increases volumetric efficiency, which increases HP and Torque.
  • Increased Mileage
Reduced restriction cuts pumping losses, which increases mileage.
  • Better Protection
Progressive Media has greater filtration efficiencythan traditional non-progressive performance media. Progressive seal in panel filters prevents dirtbypass seen in traditional performance filters.
  • Lifetime Protection
Cleanable media and lifetime guarantee, the last air filter your vehicle will need.
6. spoon air cleaner $88.00 on aj-racing.com
**fits a/t and m/t models**

(copied from aj-racing.com) The Spoon air cleaner is a drop in replacement of the stock Honda filter. Spoon recommends that due to the design of the VTEC engine, the stock intake box be retained to maximize throttle response.

7. mugen drop in filter $125.00 on jhpusa.com
**fits a/t and m/t models**

(copied from jhpusa.com) Using technology developed in F1 and GT engine programs, Mugen has developed a new direct replacement air filter. The primary filtration system is a steel mesh material moisturized with a special filter oil. This system is then wrapped with a low density sponge material that prevents debris from passing. This system reduces pressure loss by 50% when compared to the OEM filter.

i think that is it for o.e. replacement filters. i will up date these later on tonite but my shift is over and i cant sit at this computer any more. so basically... this thread will be updated and finished later on tonite.

Here is my contribution. Sugarphreak did one on CAI's so that's why they aren't in my write up:

Short Ram Intake Systems

Short ram intake systems are slotted in between cold air intakes and chambered intakes. Short ram intakes and cold air intakes use similar if not the same type of tubing to help increase the flow of air into the engine. However, short ram intakes like the name suggests is shorter and located inside the engine bay like chambered intakes. This allows for a simple installation and easy filter cleaning when necessary. It does not give as much response as chambered intakes, but is a good alternative to chambered intakes if you have an AT Fit or aren't willing to tinker with a cold air intake. To date, there are two types of short ram intakes for the Fit not including cheap eBay ones.

Fujita Short Ram Intake

The Fujita Short Ram Intake is similar to the Fujita Cold Air Intake, but located within the engine bay. Fits both MT and AT Fit's.

~3.8BHP gain and ~4.3ft/lb Torque.

Injen Short Ram Intake

The Injen Short Ram Intake is actually converted from the Cold Air Intake. No picture could be found. Gains are ~3.3BHP and ~3.4ft/lb Torque.

Chambered Intake Systems

Chambered intake systems are similar to short ram intakes, however they contain a chamber instead of straight piping. Chamber intakes provide better throttle response and more low end power. However, it does sacrifice a little top end power. A positive of chambered intakes over cold air intakes is that the filter is located inside the engine bay. This provides easy access to the filter for cleaning and prevents the filter from getting dirty in less than nominal conditions. Also, chambered intakes can be used in AT cars and MT cars alike. On the negative side, chambered intakes usually absorb warmer air since it is located in the engine bay. Currently there are 3 chambered intakes on the market.

T1R B-Max Carbon Intake

By far the most popular chambered intake around. Produced by AJ Racing out in Vancouver, Canada, many Fit's are currently running this intake.

5.3BHP gain and 5.09lb/ft Torque.

Last Station Power Box

Very similar to the T1R B-max Intake. No information regarding the gains, but expect it to be similar to the T1R values above.

Mishimoto Intake System

Brand spanking new on the market, no results to speak of yet. Cheapest of the three chambered intakes.

Other Intakes

J's Racing Tsuchinoko Intake

The fabled J's Racing Tsuchinoko Intake. Recently developed by J's Racing straight from the land of the rising sun, Modifications were needed to adapt the JDM version of the intake to fit the USDM Fit. Currently, there are only 4 USDM Tsuchinoko Intakes, one of which is pictured below and is the final product after development with AJ Racing. The other 3 intakes have recently arrived at AJ Racing and have already been spoken for. Don't expect to see too many of these in NA Fits as they are extremely pricey, up to 2x-3x as much as a CAI, SRI, or Chambered Intake. However, this intake provides the most gains throughout the power band. It is basically a combination of a chambered intake and a cold air intake made of carbon fiber. As quoted from AJ Racing: "One of the hardest part was the intake. The Tsuchinoko (susage) portion fitted with no problems but the sensor hole and cold air portion's fitment were way off so J's Racing made adjustment for USDM Fitment...They finally got that done but it took them almost 3 months to do..."

part two: short ram intakes
these are the few that illusive forgot, well he got the main ones, these are the ones that arent so well known.

1. k&n typhoon short ram intake $235.00 on nopi.com

(copied from k&n's site)

Built for performance and show, the Typhoon™ Air Intake System is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system designed to fit many sport compact performance vehicles. Typhoon intakes come in one of three designs; cold air intakes (CA), short ram intakes (SR), or complete cold air (CCA) intakes which can be configured as either a cold air intake or a short ram intake. Some Typhoon's have high quality finish options including polished aluminum (part ends with TP), powder coated blue (part ends in TB), powder coated red (part ends in TR), and powder coated silver (ends in TS) among others. K&N intake systems replace your vehicle's restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing. K&N intakes are designed to dramatically reduce intake restriction allowing more air flow to your engine. More air means more usable power and acceleration throughout the engine's RPM range.

**if you havent already seen the threads about it, dont buy this intake!!!**

2. hks super mega flow reloaded intake $139.00 on hopupracing.com

(copied from hopupracing.com)
HKS Super Mega Flow Reloaded intakes have been engineered to dramatically reduce the restriction caused by factory air boxes. The redesigned filter assembly has the same patented Super Funnel design from the previous generation, but also features new technical advances: - Filter cage allows for 30% more intake surface area - Aluminum back plate for added strength - Sealing ring reduces contaminants from entering engine - 3 Layer, triple density dry filter element

3.zero 1000 power chamber $149.00 at jhpusa.com

(copied from jhpusa.com)
The Zero 1000 Power Chamber Intake System is a must upgrade for naturally aspirated engines. the uniqueness of this intake system is its design, it ustilizes an enlarged dry carbon chamber and a spiraled filter. The air is sucked in through the filter resulting in a swirling effect. This swirled air is then captured in the chamber where it becomes compressed, which will cause the air to become denser. Increased density in the combustion chamber means an increase in horsepower.

4. hks super suction kit $663.39 at bullerproofautomotive.com

(copied from bulletproofautomotive.com) High capacity racing intake kit made of aluminum. 70mm-60mm piping

5. honda-veni chamber intake $679.77 on bulletproofautomotive.com

(copied from bulletproofautomotive.com) appears to be the sma design as the t1r bmax. i cant find any info on this, it isnt even posted on the honda-veni site.

(copied from boomplustoys.net) i cant find any info on it, but its arc. they are a pretty reputible company

8.h-fit supa sucka chamber intake $295.00 on h-fit.com

(copied from h-fit.com)
Performance Optimization

Knowing that intake air travels in pulses through the intake tract and manifold, H-FIT Engineers decided to harness this effect in order to optimize the air intake velocity and volume. Using the known equations for pressure to velocity relationships (P1V1=P2V2), and the known thermodynamic properties of nozzles, the intake box was designed to meet the required performance criteria.

Air travels into the intake “box” through a large opening. This filtered air then fills the “box”, creating a reservoir of air. This serves as a reserve at lower rpm’s and during sudden throttle plate opening. We have found that this increases throttle response. As the engine RPM increases, the intake air requirements increase, the higher frequency pulsed flow of air through the optimized inlet and outlet ports on the “box” create an increased pressure zone within the box, and an increased air velocity at the throttle body port. The volume of the box was designed to give an internal resonance just prior to VTEC switch over. The optimized port sizing and resonance create a slight “Push” effect on the intake air which forces air into the intake manifold (Helmholtz Resonance). This allows for a more noticeable VTEC effect.

9. apexi power intake $123.00 at optionsauto.com

(copied from optionsauto.com)
The Dual Funnel Power Intake evolved from the highly successful Super Intake. Subtle refinements in the design and filter element resulted in a 10% reduction in pressure drop. Utilizing an upper and lower funnel, the Power Intake reduces air turbulence within the filter and creates smooth air flow into the throttle body. The Power Intake is a maintenance-free dry-type air filter and will alleviate the problem of filter oil from "wet" air cleaners interfering with the air-flow meter. Accept no imitations.

10. afe stageII intake $189.00 on afefilters.com

(copied from afefilters.com) i dont know what to say other than whats on here. there isnt really that much else posted any where on the web.

In your earlier good post on the available short ram intake systems, you used the OLD K&N Typhoon SRI photo. This design is no longer made because K&N admitted that it was not designed properly for the Fit. The new design has a MUCH smaller "heat shield" that looks more like a tray or cookie sheet. It does NOT prevent hot air from the radiator from entering the intake, and it does not prevent rain from entering at the leading edge of the hood and soaking the exposed filter.

People looking for a good quality performance intake should NOT buy the K&N Short Ram. For new members, I have two threads full of personal research on the K&N system, and a "war" with K&N. BAD QUALITY!!!.

i guess i should have made it bold and bigger. but thanks for the input, the last thing any one with a fit deserves is a k&n intake. but then again, if people did their research and read through threads like they should then every one who has looked for intake advice on this forum should know not to buy k&n's intake.

So I decided today that I am going to be the test monkey for the ARC airbox on a USDM. I haven't seen any info on it outside this thread. If it works than yay!

If it doesn't work than I guess I will have a nice 300 dollar collection box.

I emailed Mackin to see what they can find out for me and see if I can't get one ordered up. I'll keep everyone posted.
