Despite what they potentially cost, I'm tempted to wait a few months for the new S2K-R projectors . . . although I haven't seen anything objectionable about the H1 version of the mini's, they seem like a great way to go, especially considering their price & how easy they are to install.
only thing about the s2k-r is they wont be bixenon, so u'll lose high beam

What is the selling point of the S2K-R if you lose the high beams? Are they JDM Yo! ? JK JK I got my headlights today and now I am overwhelmed with the false notion that i can do this myself. I should ignore this impulse before something very bad happens LOL

Ah, I had forgot about that . . . granted, I pretty rarely get a chance to use the high beams, but not having them at all is a big pill to swallow.

I guess the only thing I'm waiting on then is the D2S version of the morimoto mini's . . . supposedly summer 2010, so should match up for when I'm looking to take the plunge.

I am almost convinced to do it myself. I guess if i get in over my head i can always call one of you fine fellows to rescue me right? Like every person who has ever done this I am most worried about the headlights leaking when they are done/put back together. I suppose a Clonopin washed down with some Stoli will fix that......

I can't think of a single project whose outcome wouldn't have made the evening news with the addition of a little beer! The one part I'm still fuzzy on, and i understand that pictures of it are hard to take, is the fitting and attachment of the shroud around the projector. Do you glue/tape it to the old reflector? Or does it get attached to the piece that is painted body color in a stock headlight?

My shrouds are attached with JBweld straight to the projector itself. I've already had to fix one, when the jbweld came clean off the projector. I think it was mentioned on page 2, something about high temp rtv, but it has to be the correct stuff otherwise it'll fog up the inside of the lens. If you take a picture of the back of the shroud that might be useful.

I have been encouraged by this thread to try it myself. Now I need to decide whether I want to change my headlight color to black or leave it VBP. I'm getting a carbon fiber hood which will be re-cleared in a satin finish and can't decide which way to go.....

Yeah, its not that bad at all. The red RTV is what you want. Ill get some pictures of it. You will also want some extra butyl sealant to apply before sealing the headlight back up. I got both the butyl and the RTV at Pep Boys

How hard is the wiring for retro fitting? That's the big question mark for me. I'm not worried about anything else, but I SUCK when it comes to electrical work.

That was the bigger problem for me as well. I had a plug n play kit harness that I hacked up but I had to think and test with my multimeter to make sure I had everything right.

You're right they do, but there will still be some wiring involved and honestly I just fail at wiring.

If you get the harness from retrofitsource there houldn't be any real wiring needed. Just mounting the ballasts and creating a good grounding location so the high beam solenoid can do its job. Too bad you're in TX, I'm good with wiring and lousy at cracking things open like headlights, you don't seem to mind opening the housings but need help with wiring. We make quite a pair! LOL

So I took the headlights off this past weekend and took them apart. I remounted the projectors (the correct way) this time and also shot some wd-40 in the solenoid plungers...High beams now work consistently!
- Success!

I also decided to change the front parking lights with the front turn signals. The idea being that if the turn signal (big bulb) is made the parking light, it will essentially be an amber daytime running light and then the smaller parking light can be the turn signal. I swapped the wires and now the turn signals flash twice as fast which sucks. Tonight I will swapping them back around.
- Failure!
