Sound deadening info

2nd post...

pre 18 Fits are just loud. I wasted a lot of time and money trying to fix it so here's my observations. Hope it helps.

1st things first, start here: start by taking your spare out and checking the pressure. Mine was 10 psi. From the dealer. Not cool. But what is ineteresting is notice under the spare there are three contact patches with the metal tub. Knock on the tub without the spare in there, it's a giant bass speaker. The properly inflated spare is part of the sound deadening believe it or not so do this first. Added benefit: a usable spare in the event you need it! Also don't ever put anything between tire and metal i.e. Noico, dynamat or felt etc. you need that contact good.

Ok I went ahead and put lots of the noico and another off brand in the car and it only helped a little. It has its uses but in reality if for the loud bass crowd to keep interior parts from rattling when they are pushing high DB. I also installed a bunch of 1lb mass loaded vynil (basically sound deadened showdown site advice). Here the problem. I didn't notice that much difference and I was unable to get anything to fit right. Hondas are like gigsaws and there just isn't room for anything that rigid and thick in there. Only under carpet and just barely. No idea how theses guys are getting it ina door panel. And in order to stop sound anyway you need an AIR tight seal! Open your door to a noisy room and leave just I half mm gap and it's still noisy. So I'm convinced you can only do so much with this approach, it really has to be engineered into the car. I really respect the engineers after all this.

What I ended up with was pulling most of the vynil out and removing a lot of the butyl ( incredibly difficult, and do not apply it over anything other than metal, I found trying to remove it that it has some petroleum base in it that over time literally softened the factory sound deadening sheets, don't do it or only use the real 100% butyl ones like dynamat, I learned the hard way. )

I ended up using of all things the "Ultra Touch radiant barrier" fromHome Depot online. It's basically recycled denim with foil backing. I bought two or three rolls Online. The smaller rolls are more dense according to people's reviews so stick with that. It's treated for fire which also makes it mold preventing too according the to website. It doesn't smell but you need good scissors to cut it. It's not heavy either or sticky etc, just a little dusty when cutting since it's cotton based. On its own it does quite well but I also found the the cheap Chinese sound foam on eBay also works well too. But both do even better if you put a small layer on top of them. I used audimute but noticed they no longer carry the 2mm version. It was a little stinky though it did completely go away. You might try getting the thinnest layer of something similar instead. I tried placing the foam or the radiant barrier around a blender for fun and one layer did well but when adding just that thin extra layer of rubber on top it was shockingly quiet so give it a try. (I know not scientific and my car isn't a blender&#128513

other things i tried was spectrum sludge in wheel wells. Not a difference I could tell I hate to say. I even switched from factory tires to pirelli centurato p7 (something like that, the one with the highest rating for noise on tire rack. I had to modify the size ever so slightly to find that tire for this car. I used 205-50-16. Nice tire but it didn't fix the noise issue but did make it better at high speed on highway)

i did did end up cutting some MLV and fitting it in the wheel wells but again I'm not sure how much any of this was useful. I think a lot of the noise in the car is transmitted sound. I bet if we switch to the 18 shock and strut setup it would help since I think they used a softer shock and better rubber bushings. All in all it's better than stock by far and much more comfortable too.

so in the end... don't waste money and time like I did. It was fun to a point and I learned a lot but man, just spend a little more and get a quiet engineered car. I never would have bought the expensive vynil and would have only purchased the dynamat brand or other 100% butyl CLD tiles and only a single box as it's not that helpful to someone who is just trying to cut road noise not sound system blasting.

I liked mine though, made in Japan etc. I even found a crumpled up japanese loading dock form stuffed in behind the driver fender well lol.

one other thing I saw that might help is getting a Honda jazz rs sport engine cover on eBay. It's just a top cover but it has some sound deadening in the inside to help with the engine noise. I haven't don't this but it looks helpful and not to mention cool!

This was a dorky guys experience, may it help you. Don't flame me please I know some things work well in other applications.

Did you sound dampen the floor, roof and behind the dash/firewall? Because sound also comes into the cabin from these sources.

It is still an economy car. Not a luxury automobile so it is not going to be as quiet.

i did everything but the roof and yeah you can only go so far when it's not been made to be quiet from factory. But you can make a dent in it.

I've did everything including the roof. The only thing I'm waiting for is for some crack in the front windshield so that I can "upgrade" to the thicker glass in the newer models. I haven't even touched the rear hatch door yet.

Rear hatch is easy. It just pulls down but requires some force. Keep it light back there whatever you use.

Very informative post! I have made a thread too about my experiences.

Wondering if you put butyl or other insulation under the windshield in the engine bay? That is something I want to try. Have to remove the drainage shield first (behind that the firewall will stay dry). The strut tops in this car are basically in the cabin with you, my theory is this is a big contributor

Very interesting tip on the spare tire. Had not considered that at all!

I found biggest things were insulating under dash, and stuffing some pillows under the magic seat-- the metal there is directly exposed to the rear axle* space bc the gas tank lives elsewhere unlike most cars.

I love the idea of pillows under the magic seats. I have a ‘19 Fit but it still seems loud to me (coming from an Accord). I’m going to move my spare blankets from the trunk to under the seats. Thanks!

Not bad ideas, I know it tried stuffing polyfill in that area in the cowling where the shock towers are and to my amazement I can actually access the pollyfil from under the dash as well. So somehow there is literally a hole to the engine bay in these cars. Not sure what to do about that one though. I stuffed it up under the dash as far as I could reach under toward the windshield. I'll have to try the pillows or such under the seat. But I do have radiant barrier under the carpet there already. When removing the plastic fasteners to release the carpet there you can actually see sunlight through the holes! No wonder it's loud stock, good job Honda.

I agree. There's definitely more road noise with my '19 Fit.

I have a '10 Fit Sport. I didn't do anything radical, but when it was new I had it rustproofed with extra undercoating to help with sound. I made a cargo area cover out of foamcore to help keep noise out of the cabin and added those fitted floor mats. Helps some but it's never gonna be as quiet as an Accord, of course.

The undercoating does help a bit. The fitted floor mats actually help quite a bit too, I bought them for my tesla and it's considerably noisier without them I noticed. It's the low frequency noise that's hard to kill without reengineering the car.

luxury cars have like 400 lb of sound deadening material. Part of the reason Fits are economical is they're light. That would defeat the purpose.
