shut it off if I need to have lift gate open for a very long time? I didn't see anything in the manual.

I'm pretty sure it turns off by it's self. Doesn't it???

 

naw it doesn't turn off by itself. U gotta manually latch the latch on the trunk lid to think that the door is closed. Just stick ur finger in there and pull the white latch sideways. That is the only way to turn off the light. Just make sure to unlatch it by pulling the handle before shutting it or else the hatch will bounce back.

go to your local breakers and get yourself a rear hatch / boot light assembly from a late 90's civic / accord.

Most of them had the light assemblies like this one were there is a switch to turn it off and on.
