How in the world is everybody getting 40+MPG?
After driving the car 30k+ miles I've come to realize that the car, the 5AT, is happiest traveling between 70-75mph. I've acheived well over 40mpg during trips like this. This keeps the rpms around 3k.
My best tank ever: 37mpg start to finish. MY worst: 24mpg start to finish.

Just got 42.1mpg on my last tank. That is with 110miles of 70mph(cruise control) on the interstate with the A/C on coldest setting but blowing on the 1 and 2 fan speed. Half the drive was flat and the other half was big hills. The rest of the driving was my typical daily driving. I experimented with the coasting in 5th gear since it supposedly does not use fuel. I do not have a scanner and was curious. I guess it didn't hurt but I couldn't say it did better unless I made the same trip NOT coasting in 5th.

No mods really, just skunk2 short shifter and I use mobile 1 synthetic oil. It is all in the technique.
Mods(air intake and exhaust) on the fit would more than likely make you run rich(decreasing mpg), especially if it is not tuned and that can't be done unless you have K-pro which is ridiculous for the stock motor.

lol that's sticking it to the man! You better bring your skills to the go-kart track!
I am so excited I finally achieved 50mpg in the FIT! By simply switching to 89 octane.
Don't get me wrong I am doubting it which is why I filled up on 89 octane again to see if it was real.
267.3 miles and only took 5.3 gallons to fill it up(I stop at the first click of the gas pump)
I had only been using 87 octane. The Sonoco Gas station was having a special Friday since they ran out of regular unleaded they sold 89 for the same price.........I filled up 9.9 gallons of 89 octane.
I began to wonder what the compression was in this motor and looked into it to find out it is 10.4:1 which would make sense to use a higher octane fuel. If 89 is truely the deal breaker then I will try 93 and see what that gets me.
How many people are or have used 89 octane is my question???

I would believe if you were able to repeat your feat, first time you filled up did you use the same pump? Same station? Did you fill only to the first click? How do you know that the first click is the same for each station or each pump you use?
If 89 were really needed then Honda would recommend using 89. Try the 93 and see what you get but I would predict it would be less than 49 mpg.
I did a bit of testing on my own. I don't have speed limits above 60. So 70 or 75 is out.
I drove for 273 miles mostly highway but some urban, at 1500 rpm up to 2100 rpm most of the time using automatic transmission in D and sometimes a little S with upshifting early to keep rpms down under 2000.
I can report I was for the very first time able to get 32.2 mpg using an automatic which is great news for me. This was 87 octane. I fill at the same pump same station and go to the 4th or 5th click to the point of overfilling but not spilling out at all.
The filling point error is less when you fill up at least 8 or 9 gallons.
I know some drivers report best mpg at 3000 rpms but I was way lower than that. I did use some cruise control but on hills it downshifts and bumps rpms up 500 rpm.
I won't believe it until I repeat it as well. I made another thread about the 89 octane to document the adventure to see, if in fact, I can duplicate the result. I didn't want to clutter this one up anymore than need be. Wish me luck for it will be good for us all.
Don't do like many others have on here, and claim "like 90 octane gas will increase mpg to 48mpg" before you have done what ever it is more than 3 tanks of fuel and can see some kind of trend..........
I finally cracked the 40 mpg barrier. After a few 39.x mpg tanks I managed to eek out about 40.5 mpg on this last tank. That surprises me a bit because I spent a day driving around San Francisco on this tank and am at 10% oil life, both of which I expected to contribute to a lower mpg result for this tank. I did drive in the 65 mph range and coasted a lot (on a good day I can cost about 95% of the two miles from my home to the highway, a drop of about 1000 feet) and spent some time drafting big trucks.
My overall results show a nice linear increase in mpg with the number of miles I've driven the car. Part of that is a change in my driving style to maximize mpg, but part of it could be "breaking" in the Fit. I don't expect the 40 mpg trend to continue too long as I'll be using the AC in a month or so when it gets really hot here.

I suspect your +40 may be because the fill on that tank was just a tad less gas than your normal. That's very common because of the long fill neck makes the fuel fill vary more than most cars.
In any case, nice job and keep saving gas in your Fit... because. it's the right thing to do.
Thanks for pointing out the oil viscosity dependence. I'll look for that after an oil change and then not freak out to see a drop in mpg.
That might be, but then fuel fill variation would work both ways wouldn't it? Thus my 39.2, 39.1 and 39.5 mpg tanks might have been over 40 mpg? That said, I always fill up to "one click" past the first shut off. YES that's true. In fact, the pump you go to and use seems to be way more consistent than the ones I use at Costco. I fill on med speed till 1st auto cut off then and a 5 sec wait one more at med speed.
Thanks for pointing out the oil viscosity dependence. No problem always like to help other do better....
I'll look for that after an oil change and then not freak out to see a drop in mpg. Yep would be nice to see. I suspect the variation are small but the direction will be right.

You not enter your records on the cleanmpg site. Good to see more Fit users that know how....
