De-Sporting the Sport

I asked this question in a previous thread but got no answers.

I like the look of the Basic Fit (just me, no judgment). I also like some of the extras in the Sport.

So how are the Sport's body mods attached? Can the underbody mods be unbolted easily?

I'm really considering getting the Sport over the Base if this is possible (though I'll probably hold out for the '09s).

Thanks.

you will need to get base bumpers. because there are tabs that attach the front lip and rear lip to the car. there's holes in the bumpers.

and for the side skirts, iirc, there's holes as well.

honestly, i bet a base owner'd swap with you. and cash on their side.

Which extras are you looking at? The Base can be modded with some of them.

My humble opinion on Sport-like Base mods:

Easy Base mods - keyless entry, OEM Sport wheels, Aux port
Reasonable Base mods - Fog lights (haven't done this one yet), Head unit replacement (if you can get the old one out)
Difficult Base mods - Cruise control, steering wheel controls

I didn't include body kits since you didn't want them and I haven't done them. The non-Sport mods I added: all weather floor mats, door sill garnish, rear bumper applique, cargo floor mat, steering wheel cover, color-matched AT shift knob.

Is any information available on the cruise control install? I know you can purchase an aftermarket cruise control so I found it interesting that you listed it as a difficult mod.

I'm planning on adding cruise control in the longterm and I haven't seen any actual install info on FitFreak, anyone have experience with this?

does anybody know what would be involved with removing the spoiler on a sport fit? I think I like the look of the car without the spoiler.
How could I go about filling the holes?

I think it would be pointless to go through the hassle of removing the Sports "looks" because you dont want it.
Granted I have a base front bumper on my Sport, but thats because I didnt want foglights anymore.

As Matt said above, theres holes all over when you remove the Sport body lips.
Removing the rear spoiler will unveil 5holes I believe. Just add plastic plugs from HomeDepot or Autozone.

Don't get the base because it has a key hold on the back hatch, but don't take the lips and fogs off of the sport because the bumper has to be cut up to accept the sport pieces.

You're right - aftermarket cruise controls should be in the moderate category. If you want to add this as a stock feature, I'd give it a difficult since putting in the stock turn signal with all the additional wiring would likely be a bear on top of the other items involved.

I installed an aftermarket cruise control on a Pontiac Fiero and it wasn't hard once I located the speedo signal. It never worked as well as the one's installed by the factory though.

Just get a SPORT and swap out what you dont like about it. it is better to have more to start with and start taking things off then adding things to it.

Matt was only stating that removing the OEM lips (front and rear) leave holes in the bumpers. These holes are where the brackets hold up the lips onto the bumpers.

The only thing you can remove without problems is the sideskirts.

yeah thanks ray. although i agree with black cobra. in 20 years when someone sees your car for sale, they'll see "base model fit" or "sport fit". would you rather buy an SI crx or dx? lol

What kind of holes are we talking about? Size? Number?

If there are holes just on the underside of the bumper/side, I can live with that (if I can find a way to keep the water out).

Of course, I drive a '94 Golf with no door handles and a cracked windshield, so YMMV.
