Mine is doing it too. I am going to the dealer to get it fixed asap.

 

Can you take some pics of the peeling paint? Id like to see what to look for...when I get mine.

Ah ok. I just checked out the first page. I think I would just insert the plastic/aluminum washers myself. It seems easy enough. I mean ill still bring it up with my dealer.

I just read MartyMcfly's step by step thread and it mentions that there is no holding screw for the back bumper. How does that come off?

Anyone with a 2008 have any trouble yet??

On the rear, there is no holding screw for the interior wheel well cover. There is of course the screw to hold the bumper to the panel. Without the interior wheel well cover in the rear, it is much easy to access the bumper screw.

i painted my headlights...and just realized the beginning of this paint peeling problem. my question is, if the dealer saw that i had to take the bumper off to paint the headlights...would they void this warranty and peg this on me?

 

So, took it in the other night as the local Honda rep was in the area. Met him, he reviewed the sides as well as the bubbles in the hood (right from the get-go I had bubbles in the paint on the hood) and told the service manager to do what she had to do to get it done. I should backtrack for a second, I had e-mailed the service manager a day or two before and included the service bulletin as well as a handful of links (including this thread) to others having the problem. I mentioned it briefly again and the Honda rep expressed interest in seeing the bulletin and the links but said again that they'll get it into the shop and have everything fixed up. I was really, really impressed. He was quick, he took ownership of the issue and I had to say very little.

Car goes into the shop next week and we'll see what it looks like afterward. I have to confirm w/ the manager the drop-off tomorrow and I'll verify again that it will be full removal of bumper and hood, repaint (not just touch up) and then reassembly using the spacers included in the bulletin.

We'll see what happens. Kudos to Honda so far...

 

My experience:

I printed out a few pictures from this thread showing the peeling paint problems other people were having. I also printed out the May 2007 Honda Service Bulletin detailing the problem and the recommended fix.

I took these with me to Honda and spoke to a service representative. He told me I'd need to speak to a service manager, and the service manager wasn't available. He told me to come back the next day.

So the first lesson: Call in advance and find out if a service manager is going to be there when you show up!

I came back the next day and the service manager had called in sick. D'oh!

Second lesson: Remember the first lesson.

The third time I went back, I called in advance and I finally got the service manager (after waiting about an hour). I showed him the bulletin and the places where the paint was peeling. I explained that the fix as I understood it seemed to be to take off the bumpers, repaint them, and then reattach them using spacers between the bumper and the body. (The service bulletin does not explicitly say that Honda should repaint the bumpers, it only says that they should install the washers, so this was my way of making sure he also realized that repainting would be necessary.) He nodded. He took my copy of the bulletin, wrote some notes on it, and said he would authorize their collision center to do the work under warranty. They would give me a loaner car while my car was being fixed.

I now have to make my appointment with the collision center.

I never had to show the service manager any pictures of the peeling paint I had printed out from these forums, but they may still be useful when dealing with the collision center. I can show them the kinds of damage that could be lurking unseen when they unmount the bumpers, and hopefully convince them to at least strip and repaint the entire area where the bumper meets the body rather than just patching the flaking areas.

I definitely advise taking the service bulletin with you if you want to convince Honda to repaint your bumpers (if your paint is peeling) or put in washers (if the car is new or the paint is not peeling). It gives your argument that this is a Honda Fit problem a lot more weight.

I'll post again after the bumpers are fixed up. So far, so good.

 

my paint sucks too. small chips in the front already @ 4k miles. taff white.
and the rear bumper clear coat along the higher portions of the bumper feels gritty like there was trash in the paint when it got done, noticed this after my 1st time waxing it the other day.

 

Well, got the Fit back today and I'm really impressed w/ how this all was handled. Granted, I haven't inspected every inch of the bumper and hood but at first glance it looks great. In bright sunlight there's no more swirls in the hood! They told me that they put the spacers in both front and back (I didn't have a problem w/ the paint peel in the back but I'm sure it was only a matter of time) and I could barely notice the difference.

At any rate, it looks great and I'm pleased w/ how it all turned out. I can only hope that whoever else has this issue is dealt w/ in the same way I was.

 

i got the same problem but i got it from going to the car wash... its all scratched up to the next level

 

wow, you got them paint to your hood too, I was thinking about going back for my hood to see what they say. I already had the bumpers done, but when I bought my fit it was as a demo with a 1000 miles already on it, it was the only nhbp manual sport they had, so I dont know if they will warranty chips in the hood, I hope so because its the only bad looking part on the paint now, and only have less than 4000 miles on it.

 

he said he had bubbles in the hood. That would be due to a defect in the painting process. Chips in the paint would definitely not fall under the warranty.

 

Takes three minutes a wheel tops to install nylon washers. I installed them on my 2008 Fit Sport this morning.... Need medium sized Philips head screw driver,and a flash light helps.... Capt.

 

Checked my new 2008 black fit and don't see any improvement on bumper spacing to help prevent this peeling from happening.They just added a rubber trimming in the edge. So it looks like 08's will still have this problem. I wonder why is this not stickied.. mods should sticky this so that more people can be aware of this problem and give honda a call to get more attention to this problem.

 

well ive been to 4 dealerships and they will fix it but not the way i want it they want to touch it up and i'm not going for that. i told them i want a new bumper repainted and honda america says it doesn't fall in their guidelines i say bs i bought a new car and it needs paint hmmmm honda quality. i'm about ready to start a class action law suit and see if that gets honda's attention

 

let me know how that works out for you, they said they would not replace my bumpers on mine because there was nothing wrong with the bumpers, so they stripped them and repainted them and me gave a lifetime warranty if they ever peel again. i was happy with new paint and spacers but they cheaped out and only did the bumpers not the lips or fog housings, I was hoping they would do those to just to get rid of some of the rock chips, and have harder paint on them. the original paint on the bumpers is so soft you can put your fingernail into, bug impacts dent and chip the paint.

 

The dealership repainted my front bumper due to all the pits and chips, and claimed that they used "stronger paint" so that it wouldn't happen again. Took my first long-ish highway trip last weekend since the paint job, and when I got back, guess what? More pits. I love the way the Fit drives, but I'm turned off by the paint quality -- it may seem like a small thing, but I've never had a car with such weak paint, so sadly, this will probably be my last (and first) Honda. I can't imagine what the bumper will look like in a few years ...

 

Just a thought,,,,
I hit a bear and had a new bumper, fender and door skins put on,,,
I had a local repair shop fix it with genuine Honda parts/paint.
I had to wait 30 days to wax it,,,
In my eye I can see a differnece in the color (but not enought to have it repainted, may just be my brain seeing the diff)
My point being,,,,,,
I miss the ORIGINAL factory honda paint job.
even if the differnece is only in my mind I can see a different spray pattern and tint between the automated paint from the factory and the hand job from the local,,,
it was also a PITA to drive with out wax on it and keep the bug guts and rock chips off while waiting,,,,
IF IT WERE ME,,,and the paint missing from the corners of the bumper were not TOO bad, and they could cover it up with touch up paint,,,
I WOULD TAKE THE TOUCH UP PAINT OVER A LOCAL PAINT JOB, anytime,,,,, that's just me looking back,, you do what you want of course!!!!
