Obviously, if the temperature of the valve system is less than 68F the clearance increases enough to hear tapping. However, that ta[pping should go away as the engine comes to operating temperature. The longer that takes the longer the tapping. As long as you don't thrash the engine you're OK. Thr reason for setting at 68 to 100F is because that insures the proper clearances at the realoperating valve train temp - somewhere in the 200 to 280 f range.
Out of curiosity, Suzuki has automatic valve clearances by an innovative floating bucket system so valve adjustment is unnessary even though the 1300 will rev to 13,000 rpm.. Wonder why Honda doesn;'t do that.
Is that similar to hydraulic lifters? I know those get really loud on startup when they start to get leaky seals. Also if the valve springs aren't stout (read: fast) enough they'll actually overfill and prevent the valves from closing all the way.

Yes, the Suzuki valves are hydraulic just not quite the same parts as Detroit's. When hydraulic valves leak, Oldsmobile or Suzuki, the clearance increases and you get valve rapping.

Sorry to bump this but it's related. My 08 had 96xxx mi and had been ticking for some time. It also had an off-idle, small hesitation that felt a little like clutch slip. I had the valves adjusted and the ticking and the hesitation went away. Now, with 99xxx mi and the ticking is as bad as ever though the hesitation isn't. Valves out again or something else? TIA

Edit: I should add that the car runs fine and still gets its usual gas mileage, 36-37 mpg. It has started using a bit of oil, maybe a quart between OCIs.

im at 94k and having the same issues....im constantly having to re-adjust the valves to keep them from ticking...these motors are roller rocker so it makes no sense that they need to be constantly adjusted....ive never had these issues with any of the k series motors i have worked on over the years. i work in a shop building and tuning motors.

No one have any ideas, huh?

I asked the service manager at my dealership to look into it. Wonder if it'd require a new valvetrain to be worry-free again.

So I finally got around to bringing the car back in to the dealership. They kept the car overnight and said all the valves were in spec from when I recently had them adjusted (again, after two days of silence it started making the same noise). Service manager tells me the tech thought it was piston slap and it may or may not get worse. They would have to replace the motor to make it go away .

So not being an idiot, I'll take the car home and use a block stethoscope to see if I can pinpoint the location of the ticking. BTW, I rarely exceed even 4000 rpm.

I probably pass 4k rpm almost every time I run through 1st gear. So like a dozen times a day at least. Granted it's often gradual or linear acceleration, and not launching it all the time. This is a Honda, they want to wind out to red line every so often.

I use this car as my daily commuter, about 70 miles a day. My purpose for it is reliable, high gas mileage transportation that can occasionally haul some stuff. At this job it excels. It is far too slow and underpowered for me to try and enjoy wringing out the engine. For that I have a 400whp STI.

I'll report back on the ticking when I have more info for anyone that cares.
