P0980 Error Code

Hello all,

I was getting ready to go to work this morning and when I went to put the car in drive the entire car shook and made a thump noise.
My D (Drive) light started blinking and my check engine light came on.

I diagnosed it as a P0980 code. P0980 - Shift Solenoid (SS) 3 Control Circuit High Voltage (TCM)

I was wondering if anyone has run into this issue before.

I drove the car into work - Car Thumps into first and second. Will not go into Third (I think) so I kept the drive at about 30mph.

The car has about 111k miles on it. I am not sure if / when the transmission oil was changed.
It looks reddish brown.

Has anyone run into this?

I searched the forums and I saw the post/video of the guy who checked his solenoid using a battery jumper. I might start there, but I thought I would ask the question first.

Thanks for any help.

Kind regards,
Chuck Coggins III

Tell me of the first and second Mr. Coggins!
And it sounds like your issue is already diagnosed based on your symptoms and fault code. I don't believe it to be standard fare for the community though.
I can check out troubleshooting for said shift mechanism via the service manual and see if faults there-in align. Doing an independent test on a component like that would be wise. Aftermarket parts supply seems lackluster -- standard motors is far from my favorite brand, though they can make a good product when they want to. If it comes down to it, I'd check dealer/ebay prices before pulling the trigger.

Oh right! You're confident the transmission is filled sufficiently, yes?

It turned out to be a broken wire going to the shift solenoid connector.

The car is running just fine now. Although I should get the transmission flushed lol.

Nice! Nothing fun about chasing chewed up wires -- I'm really glad you got it checked v. throwing a part at it. Kudos!

As for a trans flush, well, couldn't hurt, eh? But if the fluid doesn't look so bad, maybe just a drain and fill will get you by.

Thank you!

Yeah, maybe I will see if I can find a video online on how to drain and fill the trans fluid vs. taking it in for a full flush.
Thank you for the idea!

I would drain and fill, at least one time. If you want more, I would do it a second and third time, but would not do a flush.

This is the way I drain and fill mine, a lot better than the Honda method (which wastes a lot of expensive fluid).
