Key confusion

I just bought a used 2008 Honda Fit - basic model. The key I was given does not open the hatchback. The dealer I bought it from said that I must go to the drivers side door and unlock all the doors (including the hatchback) there. This seems totally inconvenient and unlike a Honda design. Why is there a lock on the hatchback, if it is never used? I'd like to hear from other basic fit owners (no remote key open), to see if this is true or if I need to take it to another dealer to get this resolved. I paid to have a certified car.

TIA for any info.

It sounds like your car had a new set of locks installed. I'd check with the dealer that you bought it from and tell them that you want one key to open up all the doors (and hatch.)

Depending on how long ago you purchased the car will depend on the dealers incentive to help fix this problem.

I have a 2011 Fit Sport and I don't think there is a keyhole in my rear gate either. I do know that the only way for me to unlock and open the rear gate is to unlock all doors either by the lock switch on the door or remote, and then physically go and open the door.

Key Confusion-- Base/Sport

Check your owner's manual (if you have one) Ican't speak for the Base model as to whether or not there is a separate key for the hatch, but if you have the Sport model w/ remote locking/unlocking, there is NO keyhole for the rear hatch!
'07 VBP Sport 5 MT w/ minor appearance & comfort mods!!

The only key hole in the GE Sport is in the drivers door. To open the hatch you have to hit the unlock button on the key fob 2x, or use the door lock button on the drivers door armrest. Or you can put the key into the door (does anybody do that any more? I don't..)

The only keyhole in my 2011 Sport is the driver's door.

One keyhole causes me some concern because I've had rare situations before were another door with a keyhole was very handy... like when the driver's key mechanism stops working or when it gets iced up in the winter.

I don't have to worry about icing in Texas... and there is the remote.

First vehicle I've had with only one keyhole. Perhaps a cost saving measure.

Base GE's have three keyholes: Driver & passenger front doors, plus the hatch. You can see the keyhole to the right of the license plate cutout in the sig photo below. Probably the same for the GD's. IFAIK, though, both the keys supplied with the car work in all of the locks.

That's strange...to include 3 keyholes on the base..but only one on the Sport? Also, I never noticed my 2011 Sport doesn't have a keyhole on the passenger side...I guess cause I'm always the driver I never noticed....LOL

The 2011 Base Fit only has a single keyhole (driver's door) as well. It's the first Base Fit to have keyless entry standard.

So it definitely looks like all Fits without keyless entry have 3 keyholes, and all with keyless entry have just one.

It was probably cheaper for them to put keyless entry into the base Fit than to put in two extra keyholes!

The OP has stated it's a 2008 BASE fit. So why do people with NEW Sport models keep chiming in????? Yeah...the new fits have keyless entry.

If there is a physical lock on your hatchback that no key you have opens? Then yes something is wrong. You shouldn't have to unlock your doors and open the hatch only from the inside.

Does sound like the key was lost, or the lock changed and the key lost...but in either case it's wrong.

It's called a conversation- someone answered his question (the lock must've been changed- perhaps the prior owner had to change the hatch lock because a thief punched it in, and worth yelling at Honda about) and now we've moved onto a related topic- the difference in number of keyholes on other cars, and why.

I totally agree with you...that if there is a keyhole for the back hatch and it doesn't work then something has to be wrong.....I just found it weird that not all models have the separate keyhole for the hatch. This is the first car I have owned that doesn't have a keyhole for the hatch (trunk) or the front passenger door......

Fascinating topic. Let me know when it de-evolves into a discussion about belly buttons inies or outies...
