Alco if you don't like the wheels you can always go aftermarket. VW wants your right leg & left kidney for their wheels. ;-)
yah, the only reason why im keeping my factory wheels and tires until the day i sell the GTI.. for some reason it holds value!
i mean i can understand my Pretoria's on my R cause they look fantastic and even looks kinda aftermarket, but the GTI wheels are all kinda meh..
If you trade your GTI you will need the oem Austin's. The dealer can't CPO a car with aftermarket wheels. By the time I change cars mine will be too old to be a CPO.
yah, honestly if you plan on keeping your car for longer than a couple of yrs, id say just sell the oem wheels if you dont like them and get wat you want.
i have room in the basement to store another couple of sets of wheels so not a big hassle for me to keep the oem wheels. so i just decided to keep them.. but if i decide to keep my GTI for the full 5-6yrs of ownership i might just end up selling them too. im pretty certain i want to get that DSG-R to replace though.. thus i better keep the stock wheels.
I had the opportunity today to drive my wife's Wolfsburg on a one hour trip on the Interstate. I was reminded again how much fun this car is to drive. That l'il 1.8T is quickly on tap at all times and I had a blast. I qualify all of this with the admission that we have never owned a performance vehicle, but this car's sensible weight, engine punch and nimbleness seem to put it in a class that exceeds a lot of other cars on the road.
A GTI would no doubt knock my socks off, but in the interim the Golf is pretty darn cool in its own right.
Oh, our windshield gets replaced tomorrow.

sounds good, alco. i completely agree about how great these Golfs are. after driving boring normal folk rental cars and suv's i get into my GTI and im like wheeeew! so glad to be back.
Rolf the Golf received his new windshield this morning all went well. We chose a smaller in-state only glass company and were able to get VW OE glass (has the VW logo on it) at no extra charge. The serviceman has been working automotive glass for nearly 15 years and is also the firm's training and quality manager, so we were in good hands. I was happy to see him taping everything off before starting work! The black piece extending from the grille is just a windshield side trim piece.
That device you see atop the A-pillar, suction-cupped to the side window glass on the driver's side is a mount for an articulating arm that holds the glass. Rather than lean over the car and try to center it, the arm provides precise placement before the glass in pressed into place. So, hopefully all will be well with Rolf.

Wish our black was wearing as well. Ours is so scratched that I've stopped caring. Fifth black car I've owned, but first with these problems. Last one was a Nissan that I even showed and it was flawless even with age. The car itself wasn't so flawless, but the paint was fine.
Looking good Alco. That glass is so clean it looks invisible! ;-)
Good call on using a smaller company to do the glass. IMHO the big nationwide chains just do not care, at least that has been my experience.
GAFIT- I love black cars, but having lived with several I won't be buying another. Although my GTI is such a dark grey that it might as well be black. So far it still looks good, but requires more care than this old guy wants to give it.
nice alco. glad to see painters tape on the apillar. enjoy your car again!
i luv my black GTI. it’s not wearing that bad actually on my car. i’ve had stains and stuff but after polishing and plenty of uv no issue since. will be doing some paint correction this Spring for the first time since taking ownership (Jun 2016?) but only needs mild polishing.
No, I'm pretty well stocked up. Could maybe use some new microfiber towels, but that's about it I think. Mine are still good, but I like having plenty of new ones on hand.
Used Griot's Garage Boss sealant on the Golf last weekend. Pretty good product.
Forgot to mention that I also did the 15,000 mile oil change. Am a little concerned by the amount of metal sludge I pulled off of the magnetic drain plug. Most I've ever had on a vehicle. Glad the magnet was there, but wonder why so much metal sludge.
In comparison, the Fit got Spoon magnetic oil and transmission drain plugs at 500 miles. Have never pulled anything off either of them in all these years.
yah we can all use more MF towels! best of show stuff is good. i use to use it a while back. since i use so much SpeedShine on my hobby cars, it has layers of the same carnauba wax on them. :D so i don’t wax my hobby cars any more.
my cars run only Hydro and HydroMax products + SpeedShine.
metal sludge huh? i don’t use a metal plug on my Golfs so don’t know. i can’t say id care though as it seems VW figured out how to put this engine together.
Saw this older 2-Door GTI in Asheville, NC yesterday and thought it worth a photo. Such a neat and unique color! Looks like the clear coat is delaminating though. This looks like a 2007 Farenheit Edition, but I'm not sure. MK 5 is it?
yep, that's the Mk5.... i wouldve bought the R32 if i could find an MT one.. they released a handful near end of that gen in the USA which i completely missed.
Ours will look worse than that when it's that age. Also smelling coolant for some reason.
On the bright side, we took it over Blood Mountain (Hwy 129) today. It's super impressive for an inexpensive car. Couldn't run with the bikes like I wanted, but it really does do really well compared to anything in it's humble class. Maintains speed through the turns and then powers out of them with authority. Some tire spin out of turns, but it maintains composure well. Can't match the corner speeds of our Fit, but it's on subpar tires and it certainly powers out of the turns faster.
Strange thing I discovered if running it really hard. The transmission is brilliant as long as it's in full manual mode. Downshifts and upshifts are crisp and fast. Completely eliminates the jerkiness that it has if in auto sport mode.
Edited to add...this is all with running it through some serious roads at some serious speeds.
