Just bought the key from College Hills honda - link earlier on this thread. It was about $50 shipped. Programmed it with no trouble from the instructions on this page.

I cut the key off since I'm happy having the key and fob seperate. There are occations it is handy to have them seperate, like when you want to keep your key with you when you're hiking in the rain or swiming, but don't want to worry about ruining the fob.

Anyway, I cut it off. A quick tip: If you are using something abrasive, make sure you don't overheat the thing. I did and it melted the plastic some. I was able to take a screwdriver and mold it back into shape while it was still hot, but I wish I had taken breaks and not overheated it. Also, I'm not sure what the key is made of, but I think maybe brass. It will fill up a grinder wheel if you're not careful...

If just for space, and the metal part won't harm anything, then I'd rather leave the metal part attached just to not have to go throught the trouble of cutting it or melting the plastic part Please advise. Thanks.
It is pretty much just for pocket space. You can leave it on there, but it just takes up more space and looks a bit odd because it is clearly a blank key. I have had the keyfob on my base model going for many months now and I love it. I forget at times that my keyless entry setup was not sold with the car. And I have the pride of knowing the dealer did not screw me on 5 mins worth of chip programming.

Ordered two keys from CollegeHillsHonda for about $90 shipped.

Took them to my selling dealer and after some back and forth, negotiating if you will, they agreed to charge me $40 to cut and program them along with my originals.

So, for around $130, I now have two extra keys that ALSO provide me with keyless. Not bad considering that during the purchasing of my FIT the salesman told me that 1 extra key (base style) would cost $120.

Thanks to ALL who provided the great info for us.

Ok Guys,

Been looking at getting the key and doing the programming trick... Called up the dealer to ask them if they had a key in stock, got talking to the guy and explained what I was planning to do: Get the key program it, cut the key part off. He says why don't you just order the Fob then, save money and not have to cut anything off. I will let you know how this works out...

Ordering part: 72147-SWA-A01

Success! 72147-SWA-A01 part 33.00 at local dealer.

Works! Its the internals of the key, no need to cut the key off. Just drill a hole in the corner for the key chain to go through and you are done!

Hey Igorp...I have a 09 Base. This will work?
And FYI, after calling my local"Slealer" who said that same part would cost me $43, I called the Dealer I bought my Fit from and he said it would be $31.

Igor,
It looks like the FOB is missing a button. What's the clear button?

O.K. Just ordered a FOB ( 72147-SWA-A01 ) from the dealership, $31.10+tax. I'm gonna pick it up Saturday and go from there with the instructions posted here. My wife is a bit skeptical, but I think it makes good sense. I will report back next week. The first dealer I called wanted $349+tax for keyless entry and I quote him saying "I think that's actually pretty reasonable." Puh-lease, I was born at night but not last-friggin-night. Next dealership I called was $239+tax. That was better thank the first place but still too high, especially when he told me "It's just a key, nothing installed anywhere else." That's when I started pokin' around google and found this forum. If it works, thats saving me a couple Benjamins, and that's what makes the interwebs soooo kewl!

I'll post the results Mon or Tues next week, with props or flops.

Killer, I'm not sure if you got this already or not. I'll post my results Sunday night on whether the FOB worked or not.

Not sure

Moon, I don't see why it wouldn't work on a Fit purchased in Canada. They're all made in Japan somewhere, so to me that wouldn't make any difference. Did you say that you tried it and it didn't work, or were you wondering if it would work on yours? I still don't know if it'll work on mine but I'm gonna find out tomorrow. I'm just going off the info on this forum and hoping they know what they're talking about.

Thanks for addressing this, Namrekca. The Fits are made in Japan but appear to be slightly different in different countries in order to meet safety and environmental regulations, as well as to meet specific market demands.

I just wanted to be sure about the electronics of the base Fits in Canada possibly enabling these keyless entry features to work before spending the time and money for the controllers.

Pretty sure the canadian base Fit doesn't have power locks. The fob will not work without power locks.

omg my dealership where i bought my fit is seeming so shady right now.

i have a base fit, and i want the keyless entry big time, so i call them up. they transfer me to some lady and i ask her, how much to get keyless entry for my base fit. she tells me after some fumblin around, that would be 499.00. I said 500? then she says, " if money is an issue we might be able to get you a lower price". I said, what do you think? I have a base fit, so money is an issue. I said look how much more to include the alarm, and she said, we can add that for just 100 more on top of the 499 keyless entry. I said, im not some old lady, im gonna shop around, so just tell me the best price you can give me. i bought my car from you. she then says, ok let me call you back in 10 min after i check the best price. i said ok , im gonna go on the honda fit forum and see what other owners are doing about this

then i find this thread and my jaw drops.

what slim balls those sick dealers.

she never calls me back. i will make sure to call them again and ask the same question, then lay into them like a hammer on a nail

thank god for this forum

edit: so it seems there are two types we can get
1. Part# 35111-SWA-306

for about 40 bucks, and we have to cut the key off, or just leave it there

or

2.
part# 72147-SWA-A01 for like 22-35 bucks

It seems #2 is more practical and costs less.

q. I assume both program the same no problem, with the included directions in this thread?
q. Do the panic buttons work? Not that I really care
q. I assume there is no trunk button? so when we open the doors the drunk unlocks but since there is no trunk button, there is no way to get this trunk open button?

Thanks guys. you rock. its 707 am and i have not slept yet, so forgive me not making sense

As far as I understand it, the trunk latch is not on a separate circuit with the fit, so there is no separate trunk button. (I could be wrong on this, but I haven't heard otherwise.)

I just got my #2 (the fob)... I'm not _entirely_ sure it's more practical. It makes me want to encase it in something just for more durability. Also, if you want an extra key, it's not more practical.. but an extra key will cost you a lot more as it still needs to be cut and programmed (the immobilizer chip). It is of course cheaper tho.

BTW, thanks folks.. just got mine and programmed it this morning... so whoop I can now do the 1 button lock. yaaay.

Hatch unlocks with the doors so no trunk button needed.

Seems like some dealers are really trying to make a buck on this. I think most would include it with a purchase if you knew to ask ahead of time. My salesperson (wife's cousin) told me he can get the keys for $20 and get them programmed/cut for about the same. I had already gotten my key for $21 shipped on ebay and decided to make it in to a fob because it was larger than the base key.

Fit410s You might do better talking to your salesman if you have a good relationship with him. They can get these things for nothing if they want to be nice.

lol, thanks man. or i might do better avoiding the dealership altogether, since its a great feeling to be independent. forums like this empower us.

to get the fob for 23 bucks each and 10 bucks shipping or 46 for both and 11 shipping, and program it free

57 bucks on my own
200-400 at the dealer

fkn sweet

hey if anyone already purchases part # 72147-SWA-A01 at any of the above places, please post your total cost to compare which place is the best final price

im thinking cflhonda, but it all depends on the shipping cost. its not like a few bucks is a big deal since we are already making out like bandits
