HKS Turbo kit
#442
I just put the HKS kit on my car and I have some sputtering when I step on it. Does anyone know if the f-con needs a retune if catdelete is added as I am running a full exhaust with a megan downpipe. Or is this just a matter of the ecu learning. Will it go away?

exhaust is not gonna cuase sputting, it will cause you to run lean though.
its definatly sounds liek an ignition problem.
are you getting a CEL? i had an issue similar to this with my turbo, turned out to be a faulty coil.
also as mentioned, regap your plugs, or even better... get some ik22 plugs.

BTW for anyone who is thinking about putting this kit on your car... there have been many folks say they did the install in 6 hrs 8hrs. It took me 20 hrs. Started at 10am and finished 5am the next day. Stopping only for maybe 1.5 hrs to eat. I had the help of two experienced wrenchers the last 8 hrs LOL. Cudos to those that got it done so fast but to do it right and get everything secure it is quite a job. That install time includes BOV. Also just go ahead and take out your driveshaft it makes it much easier.

The HKS kit is designed to be CA emissions legal so you will need to reprogram your F-Con IS if you deleted the cat...Also If you do not change the plugs you will get a miss in one or more cylinders at high RPM

^yea, if you have no cat on the stock tune that hks kit came with...youre running lean. get a tune. this is where hks kit fails IMO...can only be tuned by a liscensed dealer/tuner.
if youve never taken anthign off the engine before, i can see it taking a while. but if your are fimiliar with the car, it shoudl eb easy. and rather than removing the driveshaft, its much eaiser to remove everythign off the top of the engine. unbolt the IM from the head, unbolt and remove the intake, remove vacuum lines and wire harnesses from their stays and the entire intake manifodl assembly will come right off. install the turbo and manifold as one peice from the top.

I looked at doing that but it seemed a bunch more work. Popping out the drive shaft is easy. Wheel-tie rod-control arm-driveshaft. It also freed up more space to attach the cooling and oil lines on the bottom of the turbo. But with anything there is more than one way to do it.

i remember when i installed my greddy kit. i did it all from up top. i had my bro there just handing me tools and he painted the front mount. i started at like 6pm and my wifes comes out at midnight and says she thinks she is in labor and that was the only car we had at the time. so i ran my ass off and finished it up. and drove her to the hospital. only to not be able to go over 4k due to the emanage and harness being bad. i think we got to the hospital at like 1:30 -2am.
but ya i had problems with it missing also. i installed new factory plugs and those lasted 200 miles till they fouled again so i took it to a shop for them to teach me and force induction plugs needing a smaller gap. the higher velocity going into the combustion chamber is basically blowing the flame out. glad it helped. hope u have fun with ur kit.

So I picked up my HKS Turbo Kit this past wednesday 4/20/11. I also got my HKS limited edition black blow off valve, AEM Wideband gauge, AEM digital boost gauge, & Megan downpipe. Paid $3400 for all of that. I am still waiting on my Megan Racing B-Pipe and axle back exhaust. I plan on painting my piping and intercooler black this weekend. I also have a guy that will dyno tune it for about $200. I can't wait.
I do have one question, for the people that are running gauges, where did you put them at?

Congrats on the new kit...!! My gages are mounted on the center of my dash angled towards the driver’s seat a bit. HKS makes little individual mounts which I have. The only problem with them is the wires show from the front a bit. I believe you can get a gage pod and that cleans up the wire problem nicely. The pods are sold at Andys auto sports and they are made by JKL.
