fender to wheel cap = 12 7/8 (3/8 in change)





per tein manual, the following is recommended/acceptable:

-fender to center of wheel = 13 inch
-max drop = -1.8 inch

after adjustments, drivers side fender to center of wheel is 1/4 under 13 inch, and passenger side is 1/8 under. does anyone know, if there is such a thing as an acceptable amount to safely stray without ruining things?

base drop was -1.4, I lowered the fronts by 0.375 inch (3/8 in), so I am still within the limits of that -1.8 inch recommend (-1.775 inch as it sits)

 

What do you mean safely stray? Lower further than the recommended 1.8"?

Actually.... one brief thing to discuss .... new Tein Street Advance Z coilovers = COMFORTABLE. it makes a 5 hr road trip just that much more enjoyable. Those of you who speak of bad back pain, and all things discomfort..... I'll say it again.... these coilovers are awesome. I am a believer in twin tube design moving forward! And I'm happy to report back that lowering the car 3/8 inch did not affect its characteristics

If you guys ever want to try something out of the ordinary .... Nelson Ghost Town .... this is a must see!

 

correct .... in the event that someone were to ignore the recommend, and go like 2 inch or 2.5 inch .... is there such a thing as a "cushion" or "grace" where going a little out of bounds is "okay"

I mean my coilovers on the S2000 are recommended at stock height to 2.5" lower than stock, I'm at about 3" lower than stock.

It may shorten the life of the damper a bit, but yeah, it generally should be fine.

Slam that shiz lol!!! I went lower then recommended and it rides the same IMO. I have over 40k on mine and still doing great. I want to say my ground to fender height is about 22" but I would have to double check (not sure how similar it would be between the chassis).

I have been playing with the tein street basis z coilovers quite a bit lately. not sure how much it relates to the gk, but since both mine and your recommended setting is 13'' ill assume they are similar. on my ge i think the lowest comfortable height is 12.5'' from center of hub. max drop puts the distance from center of hub to top of fender at 12''. at max drop i didnt hear any weird noises, but i did realize (first from feel, then i measured) the front is resting on the bump stops. my rears have about 1'' travel before hitting bump stop, when fully lowered. normal roads and cracks are fine, but the highway seams, that are like baby 1-2'' speedbumps, i could tell were jamming the strut. I dont know how durable the teins are when it comes to this kind of thing....but i know this particular thrusting blew out my stock struts with eibach red springs on my scion xa. but even if the teins can take the blows, you also have to consider the impact on the rest of the (mostly front) suspension/wheels.

at 12.5'' there is a smidge more body roll, but at least there is some sort of bump absorption. there is still the slight jamming of those highway speedbump seam things, but they are half as harsh. realistically, i think the 13'' is best for comfort and ensuring strut/shock longevity, but I hate wheel gap.

it seems logical, but the further you go from the recommended 13'' to the max drop of 12''....the more uncomfortable the ride gets. something else i noticed, especially in the front, is the first 3ish turns dont even raise the car and just begin to add preload. im at 6 turns up in front, and 7 turns up in back...which puts all 4 corners at 12.5''.

hope theres some sort of useful info in all this...lol

I'm kicking around the idea of doing down 1/4 or 1/2 inch lower as I too hate the wheel gap. I have reservations about going to max low, as I feel at that point it will affect preload in a detrimental way to ride quality, performance, and possibly damper longevity (which is huge, as I believe these are non-rebuildable)

I'll ride on it as is for another week, and then try out the other height settings (for kicks & giggles). I predict, you're on the money with your review and I'll prob end up at 12.5" or so like you did. I would love to "have it all", where I can go as low as I felt like, and fit in with the cool kids AND maintain ride quality and performance .... but thats not gonna happen =)

 

What size tires are you running? It seems crazy that you've lowered the car a reasonable amount & it still has that much wheel gap?

That's really, really short for a GK.

1.3" shorter than OEM tire, your wheel gap issues would be solved with something like a 205/55/15.

 

Oh wait the kit you have is not fully threaded? So you adjust height by shortening the spring and damper stroke. Then yes I would not go to much lower then recommended as it will put the damper in an area it was not designed to work in. The kit I have is fully sleeved so no matter the height I am at the spring and damper stroke stay the same which is why I feel no change in ride comfort just fender rubbing really.

 

It really is. I gave it a try in the name of saving weight (16lbs per tire) and hopes of increasing mpg. when these tires are shot, I'm 99% sure I'm gonna go up to 205s next go around, and hope to find something in the 18 lbs range

did Vegas (again) this weekend. for kicks & giggles, installed roof vortex generators. from what I read somewhere (I think it was the ecomodders forum), they reduce drag. we'll see over the next fuelly receipts if theres any noticeable diff .... my guess is, prob not
