So I decided to impulse buy a subwoofer today.

Background info:
I used to have an older model 12in JL W3 and I LOVED it, but then it bust :/ so I bought a Kicker Comp 12 and it pretty much suckeddd, compared to the JL, so I sold that one a few months ago. Been thinking about what to get next since then.

So today I called all of the audio shops in my area and none of them had a JL W3 in stock and I didn't really want to pay for shipping. A person at one of the shops said I could go down to the shop and he'd let me test out any sub I want without charge, so I took him up on his offer. He strongly suggested the Kicker CVR so I tried it out and to my disappointment, it was just about as crappy as the other Kicker I had. Next I tried a JL W0 and it was alright. Then I tried an Alpine (don't know exact type) and that was the best of the three so far. I tried one more, a Rockford Fosgate P1, which sounded about the same as the Alpine, but was $50 cheaper. I ended up buying that one because the shop was closing and I was out of time, though I wasn't 100% satisfied with it (maybe more like 70% satisfied). Plus, the guy said if I listen to it for a while at home, then decide I don't really want it, then I can go back to the shop tomorrow and try even more subs. They had a JBL and MTX that I kinda wanted to try out. Soooo... I don't know, any suggestions I guess?

Other info:
The shop has a pretty good selection and my budget is about $180 max. I have an old school 300 watt MTX amp, which the guy at the shop said was good quality. I already have a sealed box, it's for a 12 inch sub. Also, the man at the shop informed me that JL changed up the design of the W3, and they're no longer as good; my old W3 was a deep-cone and they don't sell those anymore, so it would be very difficult to find the same one I used to have.

Lol at 328. Even if I could afford it, I don't think the mpgs are food enough for her. Plus she'd be out of warranty in like a year.

^^ Fixed that for ya.

The MPGs would be plenty good trust me. Our '08 N54 powered E60 (535I) got 31 MPG highway easily and 23 mixed driving. The '11 N55 powered F10 (535I) got 34 highway, 27 mixed. Both of which are heavy full size sedans mind you, the E60 ~3,900 lbs and the F10 ~4,200 lbs.

For both cars staying out of boost was a little tricky since both cars turbos get up to speed QUICK; especially the E60 since its a sequential setup wear as the the F10 is a single twin-scoll, but with the E90 Sedan, E91 Wagon, E92 Coupe, or the E93 Convertible 328I they're all non-turbo so they'll get better fuel mileage on the highway in most cases. For the upcoming F3# chassis 328I, they'll be twin-scroll turbo'ed Inline-4s... can't say what the fuel mileage will be on those since they aren't state side yet until September of this year (at least I don't think is).

Yeah but we are looking at cars only 35mpg plus. And the Prius C is on the list at 40+ hwy.

Her commute is like 130 miles a day. I looked at the 1 series. I just dont think it'd work.

A 128 could work, it would just be a very impractical car since its a tiny coupe and she'd have to be kinda mindful with the throttle. If BMW would have brought their 3 and/or 5 door version (think GE8, VW GOLF/GTI size) of the 1 with either the 2 liter and downward sized gas and diesel engines they could have made a killing in econocar sales... which reminds me... BMW offered a 335D here in the states but I honestly don't know if it still available here nor do I remember the price of the thing.

I like those 1 (one) series. I still don't get how high-end car owners would worry about mpg though (Beamers are high-end to me). Seeing them in line at Costco/Arco gas stations... the picture just doesn't look right...

I love the 1 series, in fact if the 120D 3 door was here state side and around 25 to 28k MSRP or less SPEC'ed to my preferences I'd have one right now. I couldn't do a M54 powered 130I or N54/N54 powered 135I due to insurance and my right foot, maybe a N52 powered 128I but for sure a 120D or 123I.

Here's a video with a 3 door 130tii for those who have never seen one before. Note: Some sounds are ripped from movies but that distinctive raspy buzzing is straight up BMW.

BMW 130i tii on Vimeo

Also, I hear you on the fuel mileage because effectively speaking its one of those "you gotta pay to play" kinda things or on a similar note how people buy a BMW or other high end vehicle off warranty and whines about how expensive it is to maintain.

[begin slight rant]

In my honest opinion (at least with BMW), a lot of people just buy BMWs for the sake of having a "BMW" often getting one off the lot with the basic dealer packages. Usually being either Alpine White, Titanium Silver, Space Gray, or Jet Black in color with the uncomfortable sport package (blacked out/chromeless window trim & aggressive wheel/tire combos are dead giveaways) and with the typical beige interior. -.- Its understandable if that's what you can get BUT if you can get one spec'ed the way you want ORDER IT. That way one can really enjoy the experience of owning a BMW for what it is.

[/end slight rant]

Hell man, I like passing my fake stuff off for what it is.. As long as it provides the same function as the more costly stuff I see no reason to shell out for what amounts to bragging rights.... You have to have money left over for good whiskey, tobacco, pipe cleaners, cutlery, guitar strings, harmonica reed plates and cheap Dollar Store sunglasses.

[QUOTE=Btrthnezr3;1083230]LOL, I know what you mean.

I can't wait!

The wifey is up for a new car this year. I am hoping she likes the Impreza when we go look at it. She needs the non-turbo due to her LONG commute (130 miles a day).
We are also going to look at the Insight, the Prius C, Civic, Fit. I want her to have a car she LOVES to drive. She deserves it and we need the mpgs for her commute.

Driving on 175 like she does I would definitely go with a Subaru... It doesn't take much rain at all before there is water standing deep enough to cause major hydroplaning... I haven't figured out how to make my wife's Forester break the tires loose yet... . It's pretty amazing that they hold their value as well as they do down here...

Heheh... that's why Subaru had all those tranny issues when the 1st WRX came out in '02 here in the US... Upgraded chip set, an aftermarket turbo and injectors would do it for 'ya TC... Yes, they definitely hold their value. I'd love to have an '08 or later Forester XT...

A friend of mine that talked my son out of buying a Subaru and get a Volvo instead would be rolling in his grave right now if he only knew how wrong he was about the depreciation and dependability of the Subaru. It's a hell of a lot easier to find used Volvos and BMWs around here than Subies... The biggest surprise to me about the Forester is how damned European it feels and fits... I really do like Volvos and BMW motorcycles, but not so much their cars... I like Honda cars and motor scooters but the motorcycles are just never going to beat out a comparably priced BMW...

Whoa A4... nice! Must've been a really good deal. What's the mileage if you don't mind?
