I'm about to drive ~70 highway miles to take a friend out to lunch, in my base AT Fit that has about 875 miles on it. Yesterday I aired the tires to 41, and am going to gas up and see what mpg the trip gives me. On one hand I expect to do about 65-70 on cruise control much of the ride. On the other hand the trip involves the CA East Bay "Altamont Pass" crossing, which is rather steep at times. I expect the AT will be doing a double downshift to make the grade (literally) while maintaining 65...so we'll see!

Paul H (will report round trip indicated mpg later today or tomorrow.)

^ Yes but he's doing it to try and increase his mpg. Whether or not it will actually help is questionable, especially factoring in steep grades and wind blah blah blah.

@prhkgh

I hope you aired it up with nitrogen and not compressed air...

Better still, how about hydrogen? Should really lighten up the vehicle. Oh wait a minute, now I remember, something about the Hindenburg....nevermind.

1. Yes, 41psi is high...I expect to normally run around 36, just put it up for this ride to max mpg, will probably let natural loss gradually take me back to 36 over the next few weeks, or a month or two. It did lighten the feel of the car, it seemed a bit flakier than usual when I was in some gusty side winds, normal for the Altamont. I may bleed down to 36 once the car's tires have cooled overnight.

2. I considered helium to further increase buoyancy, but opted instead for an 80% hydrogen/20% oxygen mix. Fortunately there is a local station which uses that mix in its pumps.

3. I gassed up at the same station I started at, when I got home. Averaged exactly 41.7mpg round trip, including about a 10 mile in town ride out to a restaurant for lunch. That is figured by the precise math of miles and gallons...and I took care to fuel up to a shutoff and then about $0.80 more gas both times, as close as I could get to ensuring equal levels. Still this ended up being 126 miles overall, it was a rather short trip, and possible my mpg was altered some by NOT being able to fill up exactly the same both times.

4. Since I was running 41psi, and averaged 41.7mpg, I intend to air the tires to 50psi (the sidewall max) for 50mpg, and when they explode I will replace them with LT rather than P rated tires, so I'll be able to run 80psi to achieve 80mpg.

Happy maximizing! (And...no responses to bullet #4 are needed, "just kidding".)

All in all I'm pleased, although I expect 35 mpg on the highway will be more realistic driving for me. For one thing I will spoil myself by using the AC on future warm rides, I didn't today. (Oh...and the trip computer indicated 44mpg going there, and 38.1 overall...I had a sizable tailwind going, and headwinds returning home.)

found out my right rear tire is leaking lots of air... the TPMS light came on just as I was leaving home depot. pumped air and the light came back on just as I got home 20 minutes later.

should be just about flat now... sigh, I need to go put on my spare.

ordered up a new set, since these are at the end of their life anyway. got 36k miles out of them (17 months). new set should last a little longer, in terms of mileage anyway.

Ken, it's more like skateboard grip tape.

Actually I think it IS skateboard grip tape...
I applied mine the same way, no bubbles at all. And after 3.5 yrs it still looks perfectly brand new (should've done the whole car in that... lol )

It is probably a form of skateboard tape, when I was much much younger the skateboard tape we had was a bit more rougher (almost like 36/40-60 grit sand paper)

There used to be some meets a few years ago... people stopped, most sold their Fits.

Not too much happened today. Drove to work, hit the grocery store on the way home and changed out my parking lights back to regular bulbs til I can order some amber LEDs.

I agree! lately i've seen plenty of Fits around brooklyn to hold a meet and greet but i guess most of the owners aren't really that enthusiastic about driving a fit
