How does the Costco auto program work? Hassle free? Does it save time and money? I see that the Costco website asks whether you have an American Express Costco membership card. Does such a credit card help? Thanks!

Congrats on getting your Fit EX-CVT in red! I was wondering which Costco dealer you went to in the San Francisco Bay Area and how you negotiated. I was told that the only Costco dealer was Capitol Honda in San Jose. But they could not quote me any price until they had the actual car (I want an EX-CVT in blue) in stock. No Fits (of any style) have arrived from the factory in over 2 weeks.

I had another dealer (non-Costco dealer) call me yesterday and told me that they had a Fit EX-CVT in blue in transit and was I interested in putting a $500 refundable deposit on it? It's supposed to arrive in 14 days and would be for MSRP ($19025 with no discounts). I did, but of course, I'd rather pay less like you. Honda has had delivery problems for their cars in transit, so I'm not really sure when this one is arriving. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm ready to buy the thing and Mr. salesman says "oops I miscalculated invoice, it's actually $170 more than that." So I left and said I'd think about it. Anyway, here's the printout, what do you think of the deal?

Price of vehicle: 18,636
Tax: 1734
Weight fee: 8
Registration: 193
County Fee: 20
Electronic Filing: 20
Smog Abatement: 20
Doc Fee: 80

JFit123, for what it's worth, when I was trying to track down an EX CVT last week, Kastner Honda (in Napa) said they had a blue one in stock (I was looking for silver). Their "no hassle" price was $100 below MSRP.

Thanks, but I was looking for a little bigger discount. I live in the South bay, so going up to Napa would be more of a hassle for me.

From what I understand, Costco basically does about 300 below MSRP. Am I correct?

Responded to PMs.

Basically there is no negotiation. You walk in, they give the price (100 over invoice which is like 386 under MSRP) and that's it. They even give you a printout of the offer that you can bring to other dealerships and use to bargain down. I was just happy with the offer and didn't expect it to get much better and the lock nuts were a plus.

Out the Door

I spoke with the Sales Manager for a dealership in the Upper Ohio Valley this morning about a new 2015 Honda Fit LX w/CVT --- that is on the truck and due soon at the dealers. It is "reserved for me" at a "walk out the door" price of $17,350. That price includes destination, taxes, document fee, title, temporary tag, new registration....absolutely everything. If they try to add fifty cents for a paper mat, I swear I'll walk.

-------------------

I think this is just a so-so deal. How about you? I figure the car should get to the dealer in a week or two.

If you are saying that $17,350 includes Ohio sales tax of 7.25%, then this is an insanely great deal for you, where the dealer is losing about $850 on the sale of this car.

In that case, the dealer is only losing $475 on this deal. I am sure that 90% of those who have made a purchase would take that deal in a second!

I Got the Deal I was Promised!

I now have a brand new 2015 Fit LX with CVT. It's Alabaster Silver; was manufactured In July of 2014; and the last six digits of the VIN is 717166.

The MSRP was $17,115.

------------------------

In the Upper Ohio Valley, the pricing to me was $16,300 which included the $790 destination charge.

Added to the $16,300 was

815.00 5% sales tax

175.00 Document fees

10.00 Title

20.00 Temporary Tag

30.00 New Registration
_________

$17,350.00 --- Total I paid for the car (no trade-in; no financing)
====================

The dealer even threw in a set of four installed splash guards --- and a few free oil changes, tire rotations, and car washes. The car was thoroughly prepped, clean, and had 12 miles on the odometer. I thought it to be a very nice deal.

This is a great deal in so many ways!
First your car price was $385 under dealer invoice, while tru-car is reporting average sale is $17,369 or $254 over MSRP list price.
Then the dealer only charged a $175 doc fee, where some dealers charge as much as $595.
Then, your State title and registration fees were only $60, while most States are much more.
And your State's sales tax of 5% is lower than all but about 6 other states.
It is very hard to beat the price you paid!

1. Passion berry pearl ex Cvt, rear bumper applique and remote starter.
2. Ky but purchased in Colerain Ohio
3. $19,025
4. OTD $20,688; rear bumper applique was free.
Had a bad experience completely turned around so I was okay with paying msrp since the dealer near me wanted $1000 mark up.

I've had a deposit on a blue EX for 3 months, but needed a car, like, yesterday so we picked up a Passion Berry Pearl this evening from another dealership 40 miles away.

Dealer tried to tack on the protection package, and after reading all the posts here, I refused it. We went back and forth on it, with them saying that they wouldn't remove the charge because the items were already on the car, and then when I looked at the car, the only thing installed were the wheel locks. I told them to give me the key, and I'd take them off myself, and then they could remove the nearly $900 they were going to charge me for it. They refused. I told them that it was ridiculous to charge me for a package because they didn't want to remove it from the car, when nothing had been installed ON the car. They offered to give us 50% off of the package, and I flat out refused. Then there was lots of back and forth about how they'd only sold one car that day, and somehow by that logic, weren't going to sell me the car without the package added on. I told them that they could either remove the charge or end the day with one car sold. They acted nonchalant and refused again. We walked. Got into our car, pulled into their driveway, and my phone rang.

"Come back, okay? We'll do it. We'll take the package off for you." And so it was.

Do I feel like I got a deal? No. But am I happy that, at the very least, I didn't get bullied into a useless markup (that they later admitted was their only way of marking up the car, since apparently it's illegal in CA to do so)? Definitely. I didn't get the color I wanted, but ultimately, I got the car I've been lusting after, so I'm still thrilled.

Oh, and they never took the wheel locks off, so I did end up getting those for free anyway.

Price: 19025
Doc fee: 80.00
Gov't fees: 277.75
9% Tax: 1719.45
OTD: 21102.20

It really feels good to hear that things learned here really helped you to have the confidence to hold your ground and ultimately save yourself some cash! Way to go!

Good for you for refusing to cave on the stupid overpriced add-ons. I really wish more people would do that, and maybe dealers would get the clue and stop pre-bundling accessories and the "protection" packages. They know well enough that if it isn't already on the car and they try selling up on accessories, few are going to take the accessories when told, "We recommend floor mats for $200, and wheel locks for $400, and..."

But if on the car, most will just take it.

I can't believe they were trying to claim that they have no markup at all without the add-ons. Like me (and many others), you paid MSRP which is not nearly the markup from cost of most other cars (which MSRP is set at thousands over cost) but they are still making a more than fair profit. And don't feel too terribly about what you paid. That's the price of a car in high demand and not being near one of those few dealers who will negotiate. Yours was a bit more difficult than some, still, because when you're at MSRP, to still be demanding acceptance of the add-ons THAT hard is just greedy. Mine wouldn't even think of budging from MSRP, but didn't hesitate to remove all of the add-ons (that weren't permanently attached -- which was only the decorative side things -- which I got for cost) and give me a good bit more than initially offered for my trade.

Reading of spaghetina's awlful experience when buying her new Fit only served to make me understand how well I was treated in comparison. It's often said that new car dealers earn their living from their service department. I'm sure that spaghtina really feels like going to that dealer for service after the way they tried to hose her down at the sale. (Not!)

When I began negotiating for the car I eventually bought, I made it plainly known that I would not accept any dealer add-ons. I made the sales manager give me a bottom line "going out the door cost" and told her I would be writing a check ONLY in that amount --- and that is what happened.

I am hoping to find a local independent mechanic to take care of much of the maintenance I am unable to perform (under-car work is totally out of the question for me due to health problems.) There are a few maintenance procedures that I recognize would be done best by Honda, but I would certainly set some ground rules with the Honda Service Manager BEFORE I would turn over my car to their service department. You have to be careful about what you are signing when leaving your car for service---and I plan on asking about that over the phone before even making an appointment.

----------------

Spaghetina: Please enjoy your new car. Think more about how well the car was engineered and designed, how carefully it was built---and completely blot out the memory of the few days that car was in the hands of a complete reptile. Just imagine how happy that car is to be in your hands now.
