Okay, Lyon. Finally bought a OBD2 USB cable and using some scanner software, here are my specs. This is with a heatshield that doesn't fully touch the engine bay.

I didn't get the atmospheric pressure, sorry!

Air temperature outside: 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ambient air temperature: 152 degrees Fahrenheit. (This was while the engine had reached closed loop and was fully warmed up at idle)

At idle, the IAT was reading about 121 degrees.
While driving at 40 miles per hour, the IAT got down to at it's lowest, 102 degrees.

Air flow from the MAF sensor read anywhere from 2.2 pounds/min to up to 4.3, the lowest being at idle the highest being at 45 miles per hour.

It would seem to me, that the factory air scoop under the hood IS in fact, functional.

I plan to get a better air filter (Weapon*R Secret Weapon 3") and convert to Ram Air and see how good we can get this thing.

Finally got around to making my intake.
the 3" to 2" coupler I used from Lowe's was kind of on the larger end so i had trouble getting the intake in place.
So i decided to get a 2" 90degree elbow, connected that to the MAF and the TB in place of the coupler from the stock box.

my assembly is kind of large and i will secure it down soon. it is kind of stiff but still free floating right now, just resting on the front.

do you have any suggestions or tips on the heat shield? or making a bracket to support it?

edit:

i also removed the underhood scoop due to the positioning of my filter. the scoops lip was covering the front

I also removed that scoop, useless for the filter in this position. The heatshield is being held by two supports, one on the left and one on the bottom...i forget where in my thread it is but i should have some pics of the brackets i used. One is repurposed from the stock intake and the other i made from a strip of aluminum. I also made a securing bracket from an L brace to secure the filter to the heatshield bracket to keep it from moving. By doing this it also still moves with the engine because that bracket is attached to it.

Heres the pic of the left bracket

Decided to try out fitdeez version of the DIY intake. Used a K&N drop in and covered the entire intake box and pipe with metallized poly tape.
Definitely not as nice as my old T1R but it gets the job done. Sorry for the poor quality pics.

a 2" to 2.5" coupler. that will attach from the MAF tube you cut out (2" end) to you filter (2.5" end)

depends on the coupler and filter you get. i was able to stick my coupler directly inside my filter. and yes you will need the hose clamps

Well. My only question is, why 2.5"? I can't think of conical filters that are 2.5" inlet just off the top of my head. I thought most of them were 3" or more.

Others may have good options as well but I used this K&N with fantastic results:

RX-4010 - K&N Universal Air Filters, Universal X-Stream Clamp-On

2.5" diameter and a little shorter overall length than most 3" filters so its not as tight a fit next to the brake fluid reservoir and ECM.

Finally had the balls to go ahead and do this.
Got the needed parts for under $50 and took about an hour and a half to fabricate it (including trying to undo the dang screws for the resonator box, i have never ever encountered tighter screws).
Anyway, cut the thing to pieces. Used a home depot 2" - 3" adapter which worked great since the lip from the filter fit right inside the 3" opening and the air flow censor fit right into the 2" side. No taping/modifying needed.
i know the filter looks a little jammed in there, i have it squished between the intake and the master cylinder, but i got a tiny little bungee which will suspend the filter assembly by itself soon.

First drive impressions: not much louder under normal ride. under heavy acceleration you hear a nice rumble with the i-vtech clicking in at 5300. Shifting gear is smoother i find. I'll add pics of the car soon.

next, install volo performance chip.

adding an intake made your shifting smoother?

and you're adding a chip?
