Made a trip to Las Vegas on Friday. On one tank, drove about 300 miles and still had 4 tick notches left. AC all the way. Average about 39.4 mpg.
On the way back got a speeding ticket.... Boooo for having a red car.

Ya this lil engine is crazy efficient at 40 mph. You can barely touch the accelerator and it'll cruise along at barely over 1000 RPM. I understand now how you were able to exceed 50 MPG with the AC on. I mostly drive interstate where the slowest I can go is 55 mph so I can't exceed 50 MPG without turning off the AC and even then sometimes I only get an MPG of high 40s.
Drafting behind semi's is dangerous and you are only saving like a few cents a mile. You could draft off the truck's rear flank, that is behind the truck and in the next lane over, so you get some draft but you can still see ahead of you. This is tough to do if the truck is going a different speed from you. Like if the truck is going 65mph, that is too fast for hypermiling so you might be better off driving by yourself through dirty air at 50mph if you can spare the time and safely go that slowly.

Drove from kansas city to st louis and it got around 39.4 according to automatic. This is with 2.2+ hours of a 3.6 hour trip spent over 70, with some crazy acceleration at parts up to 95 mph because people drive like lunatics on I-70.

My last tank was 45.60 MPG, my best tank ever. 345 miles with 7.56 gallons. About 70% of this tank I was driving slow (55 mph) on the interstate with the AC off.
I noticed something interesting last weekend. I got better mileage in slower congested traffic than with no traffic. I was inside of Washington D.C. express lanes and the slowest I could safely go was 65mph. My avg mpg hovered at 42 to 43. Then the express lanes ended and I joined back up with the regular lanes which were severely congested. Traffic was oscillating between 25 and 45 mph. I was using the brakes often but this was still more efficient than plowing through dirty air at 65 mph because my avg mpg crept up to 46 over the next 20 minutes.

So are y'all doing the math or going by the cars calculations? Car says 39.6 avg mostly highway, manual tranny, ac on all the time. I hear that the car is always a few mpg optimistic so I figure it's closer to 35.6. How do y'all figure how many gallons you've burned through when filling up? I understand that there is a large "reserve" because the car warns you in advance to fill up. The most I've put in is about 8.5 gallons, but it takes 10, correct?

The gas light comes on with about 7.5 to 7.8 gallons used, depending on altitude, temperatures and such. I believe capacity is either 10.5 or 10.8 gallons, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I am finding on average the MPG display in my car is consistently off by approx 2mpg. To find out actual mpg divide gallons to fill by how many miles you put on that tank, but even that may not be 100% because the pump might not stop at full capacity.

You fill up, and the pump tells you how many gallons you put in. Say you went 300 miles on that tank and filled up to 8 gallons. 300 ÷ 8 = 37.5 mpg. You have to reset your trip odometer every time and fill up consistently (generally people stop at the first click) to get reliable numbers.

I've got a 13 so there might be something different, but it was pretty accurate over the first few tanks. I only use the car's display for the trip odometer- I use an UltraGauge for mileage.
